This calculator computes a radio coverage footprint relating field strength or received signal power to locations on the ground. The user is prompted for input of a ‘threshold of reception’ value. Points on the ground where this threshold is exceeded are painted in colour.

For version history of the calculator click here.

This calculator has been developed using our RadioObjX and MapObjX software components. Contact us if you would like to construct an application, portal or site using such components.

To produce the coverage plot, the RadioObjX algorithm computes the transmission loss between a mobile radio base station transmitter and a mobile or handportable receiver. The user is prompted to specify the base station parameters. Click here to see how to model the limiting path.

The threshold value is for the user to compute and enter in dBm or dBµV/m. Click here to see how this might be calculated to give the desired communications probability. Where performance is needed to different thresholds, buy multiple products and change the threshold.

Click here for details of how to interpret the coverage plot. Click here for details of the way in which the transmission loss is calculated.

The coverage is constructed using a terrain model derived from the Ordnance Survey Great Britain Land-Form PANORAMA 50 metre resolution data set.  Click here for details on this.

This calculator uses data for Great Britain only. To use this calculator, ‘add to basket’. Then either Register or Login and go to View Basket, Checkout and then consume the products from the My Products page. For other countries/territories, see other products.
